Prenatal stress lowers IQ in kids
A new study shows that children born to mothers exposed to moderate to severe levels of stress during pregnancy have lower verbal IQ. According to the study published in the Journal of American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, significant stress during pregnancy influences the child's neurodevelopment by affecting brain structures accountable for language and verbal abilities.
Findings showed that children experiencing high levels of prenatal stress have language development problems and lower verbal IQ.
The study revealed that conditions associated with higher stress levels such as natural disasters have greater effects on pregnant women and their children.
Previous studies had reported that prenatal stress is an important factor contributing to childhood obesity.
